Summary of Seminar on Environmental Awareness and Education

Formally the seminar started with the verses of Holy Quran at 9.00 am and Miss Sadia Shaukat (peli Alumni 2008) introduced the theme of seminar and highlighted the importance of Environmental Awareness and education. She explained, what is environment and environmental education?
Environmental education is permanent process in which individuals gain awareness of their environment and acquire knowledge, skills and experiences, and also the determination which will enable them to act individually and collectively to solve present and future problems.
What is environment?
• The environment is a place
• The environment is a place which contains living things
• The environment is a place which contains living things and people
• The environment does something for people.
• People are the part of environment and responsible for it.
• And people and environment are in a mutually sustaining relationship.
• Factors which are containminating the environment
• Overcoming strategies.
She also described her ambitions for the environmental protection and how she got inspired from this theme.
Aim
The ultimate aim of this platform is to make possible efforts for clean and green environment because green is a survival need.
Objectives
• To get people aware about the preservation of clean and green environment through awareness campaign.
• To introduce the proper waste management strategies
• To make sure the community mobilization in the protection of clean and green environment
Background
Miss Sadia shaukat (PELI 2008) got inspire the theme of environmental stewardship in Plymouth state university. She visited there from June 2008 to July 2008.She made her action plan on environmental awareness and education. Her action plan was under these intervention strategies.

During Tea break session prospective teachers and faculty members of University of education talked with Mr.Waseem and got more information about the environmental issues faced by Pakistan.
Second Phase.
39 posters on different themes of environment were exhibited and three panelists were requested to select top three posters .After the evaluation three position holders were awarded with certificates.Mr. Waseem was given a certificate as a resource person by Vice Chancellor.

At the end,VC of UE was requested to address with prospective teachers .Firstly she appreciated the efforts of Chief organizer Miss Sadia Shaukat (Peli Alumni 2008) for arranging this event for the purpose of raising awareness about environment among students. VC drew attention on sustainable development with its three components, environment, culture and economic situation. She pointed out the neglected areas of campus UE Township which needed attention for their sustainable development.VC suggested to Miss Sadia to collaborate with WWf and ITA for the development of a center on Environmental Awareness and Education. She also encouraged the representatives of UE, ITA (madam Beena and Saima Hasrat) and WWF (M.Waseem) for the development of Green school strategy. She said if we want to save our nature and environment, we have to do collaborative efforts because the future of our generation is in our hands.
The seminar and poster competition ended with desirable outcomes.
Well done Sadia! Your effort and hard work is evident from this brief report about the seminar. I wish I had the opportunity to attend the program. The posters are wonderful, do share with us the award winning posters. The picture of Mr. Wasim shows his confidence about the subject matter.
I agree with the suggestion given by the VC regarding the development of centre for environmental awareness and education. It is truly the need of the day. Hope you will consider it.

Yes, sir khurshid and madam Rakhshanda are quite right Ms.sadia done a really inspiring work. i remember a few days back when she called me and requested for my CV and for the seminar. I was thinking it will be a small scale event, but when i entered the seminar hall of the UE it was beautifully decorated by using the concept of reuse of things and the presence of a large number of participants made me surprized. This event was not less than a world environment day celeberation at university lelvel; it was a mega event. she (sadia) and her students tried their level best for making the event more colourfull with dominant green colour.
another important thing was that the faculty and the adminstration of the university also took keen interest in dicussion on national and global environmental issues session and spend their valuable time in the event.
honorable Vice Chancellor’s special interest and speach made the event more fabolous and memorable.
yes, ms. sadia’s efforts are really appreciable and she set out special targets for all of us (PSU Allumni 2008). i think we all especially the silent fellows need to wake up and coordinate with each other to make more colourfull our master action plans implementation phases.

Dear Ms.Sadia,
Congratulations to you and to your students, to the adminstration department of your university on the successful event organisation. I know Mr. Waseem, though he is quite young but having great practical knowledge regarding environmental education and nature conservation. i know him from last few months and i got inspired from his practical approach towards the conservation of the nature when i heared him on the wolrd teachers days celeberations as a guest presenter in 2008. I hope your students and audience all visited the whole pakistan and the wildlife species, as well the conservation education approaches through this seminar besides the environment and its components (becasue of wasim sahib’s knowledge sharing apptitude).

I was so delighted to read about and see photos from the Seminar on Environmental Awareness and Education- a topic so near and dear to my life as an educator. I echo so many of the sentiments already shared by the previous replies, especially the idea about how your post inspires the rest of us involved with PELI.
I recently read an article Beena forwarded about teacher leadership and how this concept is defined. One of the identified qualities of being a teacher leader is working collaboratively. So, I was especially impressed that you involved Waseem and others in your seminar so all could have shared ownership in the outcomes. For the establishment of Center to be suggested is a great outcome- you couldn’t ask for a better endorsement of your efforts.
Did you provide any other kind of evaluation/questionnaire on what the participants found to be most useful and valuable from the seminar?
Like Rakshanda I am interested in the winning posters and the criteria or rationale by which they were selected. This information would be very revealing and of great interest to me. Who were the panelist/judges and how were they selected? Answers to these questions could help provide a blueprint for others intending to “copy” or adopt similar practices or contests.
