He who comes, has to go…!

Published by mubasher under 2007 Participants

…then he promised to be with her forever without knowing what could be the contour of future circumstances but just like a frantic lover kept on saying without watching her face with tears falling down from his heavy eyes which seemed to be over filled as he kept his tears for years and years but finally time came when he wished to drain all what he had in his eyes for her. His sobbing made the environment rather more dismal and gloomy but his noisy speech was without any interval. For sure, he did not lift his eyes lashes for a second rather like a monk brooded with heavy tears. The entire life-real was in front of his eyes where he could see himself madly in love with her and served her like a worshipper. It is the memory of old days which is getting him crazy at moment. His loud weeping, shouting, lamenting, sobbing has only one supplication: Oh God! Get my mother back, please once, only once… but all his lamentations could not move the dead body his mother… coz he who comes has to go…

Beyond Atomic Bomb, Cricket & Poverty…!

Published by mubasher under 2007 Participants

Landing on Quaid –e- Azam International Airport (Karachi) is a key to know a people and country of cultural treasure and will pave way to the traveler to understand 160 million people who are the custodian of great heritage of ancient and modern civilizations. It is easy to have remnants of some civilization but far more difficult to look after what is left for posterity. Pakistan came into existence on the same plea that Muslims of sub-continent were the followers of such civilization that is unique in its nature. Pakistanis are the people who are talented, hospitable, intellectual and working despite being the members of developing country. It inherited poverty and disputes of permanent tensions from its old masters and still striving hard to cope with all sorts of circumstances with commitment and honesty of purpose. Even after 9/11 the only country that has been suffering most is Pakistan where daily innocent people are being killed for the reason unknown to me. In such state of affair I’m astonished to read the statement given by some British friend that the words mentioned in the title, is the recognition of Pakistan whereas Taj Mahal is of India. My friend forgot the name of Shahjahan, one of the great Mughal Muslim leaders, who did not know while constructing Taj Mahal that one day sub-continent will be divided other wise he could build it somewhere in present Pakistan.
It is just a weird notion but in fact nations are never judged on the yard stick that is taken as a funny rod in the hands of children rather total commitment to the ideals it cherish and ideals Pakistan cherishes is to be equal partner in the welfare of the people of the world. Being under developed country it has made tremendous success science and technology without getting disheartened and continuously heading forward.
Its four provinces and Azad Kashmir enjoy rich culture for which thousands of visitors come every year to experience it. Even the disturbed border area people are second to none in their hospitality which could be experienced as a guest and not as a foe. Still people have great tradition to respect elders and treat young ones with and care. Here the parents don’t have to work when their children are grown up. They don’t have pay any sort of money to their own kids to live under their roofs. Pakistani children don’t have to work when they are to play at the age of play. Here festivals are celebrated with all kith and kins without considering their social position. Here friends and cared, neighborers are respected and look after and treated equally. Here sisters are respected in such a way that they are never left alone by brothers rather looked after till death. What not we the Pakistanis have for my British friend to show who thinks that we have only Atomic Bomb, Cricket and Poverty. An example is given below:
Jefferson Thomas Highway close Hampton Inn Washington: A black old man with a slate hanging from his collar on which it was written: Homeless and Needy. One of colleagues helped him saying a human is human…!
Does it mean that the hall mark of the only super power of world is poverty because of one or some poor people? I feel no. It’s the variety the way God’s Cosmos is full of variety that guarantees completeness.

Ramadan: The month of tolerance

Published by mubasher under 2007 Participants

Islam is one of the natural religions after Christianity and promotes all such actions for the welfare of humanity what were taught by Jesus Christ (PBUH). It is indeed important to know that Bible predicted the arrival of another messenger of God, Muhammad (PBUH). Prophet Muhammad (PBHU) was also given miracle the way other Prophets of God were bestowed by Lord from Adam to Jesus. Muhammad’s (PBUH) miracle was the Holy Quran whose topic is human being. Where the Holy Quran discusses various aspects of human life, it also gives special emphasis on tolerance. The Holy Month of Ramadan has started and all the Muslims of the world community are observing fasting. Well, fasting does not mean to abstain from edibles from dawn to dusk or not to get involved in such activities disapproved by the religion. I feel fasting aims at training our lives in such a way that we may become true human beings.

Followers of Moses (PBUH), or Jesus (PBUH) or Muhammad (PBUH) would agree with me that all the Prophets of God remained tolerant even in the worst circumstances when they had all the reasons to react and reciprocate the atrocities but nothing could play with the tolerance of such personalities. I believe we can also learn the same passion from fasting by believing that God has crated man not for a very ordinary purpose but for something better which even his angels can’t do. It could be to assist and help fellow human beings who need our help. Forgetting all differences of cast and creed and following the true notion of tolerance we can bring revolution in the globe. Time has come that we must do something extra ordinary for the coming generations, especially at the time when world is divided into many factions. Time has come to make this world one faction- a faction of peace and prosperity where every body respects other, and works only for the cause of humanity. It is through tolerance this world could become a place to live happily but to learn the art of being tolerant we have to observe fasting in the true sense of the word so that we may essay for the amelioration of ailing humanity.

Reflections on program assessment and what I wish I had done at the 2007 PELI

Published by mmcgarry under 2007 Participants

During Faculty Week at Plymouth State University in late summer, Gloria Rogers, Associate Executive Director of ABET, Inc., spent a day working with faculty and staff on program assessment.  Her presentation was entitled, “Promise and Pitfalls of Assessing Student Learning”.  I thought of our Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute participants hosted this summer, 2007, who focused on preparing evaluation plans to assess the impact of past institutes.  I wanted to share some of what I thought you might find useful or at least what I plan to incorporate into my educational work.  Paraphrasing from one of the tables she showed us, for any program, one has to decide, in the following order:

  1. what are your objectives (broad statements that describe the program goals;
  2. what are your outcomes (statements that describe what participants should be able to do as a result of participating in the program;
  3. what are the specific performance(s) required to meet the above stated outcomes that are confirmable through evidence;
  4. what are the processes that identify, collect, use and prepare data that can be used to evaluate achievement; and lastly,
  5. how is the information obtained from the processes in the step above interpreted, valued, and used to take action.

While these steps don’t seem novel, I was glad to be reminded in a straight forward manner of what’s important in assessing or evaluating any kind of program- whether it be the student’s work in my classes or the professional development I offer to international educational visitors at PSU- like our Pakistani guests.  What was really nice is that Gloria emphasized that more data isn’t necessarily better, and in fact, she has a rule of thumb that one shouldn’t specify more than four performance criteria for a particular outcome.  So, for example, in her model, if the desired educational objective is, “work effectively with others,” then, the outcome could be, “ability to function on multidisciplinary team,” and the performance criteria could be, “1) researches and gathers information; 2) fulfills duties of team roles, 3) shares work equally, and 4) listens to other teammates.”  As a science educator, I might add that Gloria had particular credibility with me because she worked at a small, higher education institution that primarily focused on graduating competent engineering students, before becoming a consultant on program evaluation.  It was interesting that the examples of objectives, outcomes, and performance critieria she used for students at her former institution were so generic and transferable- valuable skills for most anyone in the workforce today.

Gloria also shared tidbits of wisdom, what she called “things I wish I had known” about program evaluation and her list included, “Capitalize on what you are already doing; You don’t have to measure everything all the time; Take advantage of local resources; and, Don’t wait for perfection.”  She had many other gems of advice (http://www.abet.org/).

Gloria provided a list of assessment methods:  “written surveys and questionnaires, exit and other interviews, standardized exams, locally developed exams, archival records, focus groups, portfolios, simulations, performance appraisal, external examiner, oral exams, and behavioral observations.”  She also emphasized that it is crucial to use a multi-method/multi-source approach to maximize validity and reduce bias of any one approach.  I’m finally getting around to sharing this information with you, which I’ve been meaning to do for several weeks, because the external evaluator for this summer’s Pakistani Institute, sent me an email asking for more information and for a time to set up a phone interview.  So, I’m pleased to say, PSU’s Pakistani Institute is following Gloria’s recommendation of using multiple assessment methods.

I’m still reflecting on my work with you this summer, asking what could I have done better and recognizing that providing a syllabus at the onset which clearly articulated my goals, objectives, outcomes, and performance criteria would have been best.  I knew about these best practices, but now this succinct chart/list is prominently displayed on the bulletin board in my office to serve as a beacon and framework for all my future curricular work with students and international invited guests.

I hope you all are doing well!

Best,

Mary Ann
