Girl Guides Thinking Day…

Published by mclauriat under 2008 Participants

My Girl Scout Brownie Troop’s Thinking Day event was a big success!

Each year in February, the girl scouts across the world celebrate Thinking Day- a day when all girl scouts recognize the importance of girl scouting.  This year’s Thinking Day event was a great success.  My troop chose to do a booth from Pakistan.  We made a flag for the flag ceremony.

The girls were very proud to be representing Pakistan, as you can see from the photographs!

After the flag ceremony, we got the booth all set up- with the poster, food and small flags that the girls made for their fellow girl scouts to take home with them…

We even made chicken and rice from the recipe Aroona Hashmi made on Cultural Night last summer!

Other Girl Scout troops really enjoyed the Pakistani Girl Guide promise and learning about henna (Razia even made the poster if you look closely you can see her applying the henna to Elsa’s little feet!!)

We had a great time representing your country and the girls really enjoyed learning about Girl Guiding around the world….

PELI Graduate Named Alumni of the Month by U.S. State Department

Pakistani Teacher Saima Khusro is an Environmental Advocate

2/16/09

PLYMOUTH, N.H.- A Pakistani teacher who participated in Plymouth State University’s Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute program has been named Alumni of the Month by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Citizen Exchanges in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Saima Khusro is a science teacher at F. G. Girls Model School, an all-girls high school in Islamabad, Pakistan. Recognized for her leadership capabilities, Khusro was selected to spend a month learning about the American educational system at PSU. Khusro shared expertise and experience working as a high school teacher in Pakistan with her American counterparts during her four-week stay at PSU last summer. Following her PELI exchange, Khusro returned to her school and established a Save the Environment Club at her school, implementing what she had learned at PSU.

The Save the Environment Club’s vision is “to make the environment cleaner and healthier.” Khusro encouraged the participating students to become active and environmentally aware during the nine-week project, emphasizing the importance of reusing materials, environmental preservation, conservation and by raising community awareness. Blakeman Allen, PELI’s director, said Khusro’s accomplishments illustrate the importance of cross-cultural exchange programs.

“A dynamic and dedicated educator, she is passionate about opening up opportunities for her students and colleagues,” said Allen. “Saima’s experiences while at PELI provided the inspiration for the Save the Environment Club with its local to global focus on environmental stewardship.”

Khusro took her Save the Environment Club project to a global level by creating a website to document the entire project. Through the site, Khusro links grassroots educational initiatives in Pakistan with a global network of teachers. Brandon Marc Higa of the U.S. Department of State said Khusro’s work is impressive.

“The State Alumni Member of the Month competition is very competitive,” Higa said. “I could not be happier that PELI, which is new to our alumni outreach, nominated a winner! Saima was definitely the strongest contender from the start.”

Last November, the Save the Environment Club was officially recognized by the Government of Pakistan. The club’s formal inauguration ceremony was held by Professor Muhammad Rafique Tahir of the Ministry of Education Federal Directorate of Education.

Since her return to Pakistan, Khusro has remained in close contact with PSU serving as an alumni advisor. She actively participates in alumni meetings and shares her training with PELI alumni from other cohorts. Khusro will be involved with mentoring participants in the 2009 cohort of PELI participants.

An article from Newfound Regional High School newspaper…

Pakistani Teachers Visit Newfound

On July 23rd twenty Pakistani teachers from PSU’s Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute visited N.R.H.S. During their visit they wer given a tour of the building by Computer Science teacher Christina Swenson and four students; Maria Avery, Keegan Wright, Ryan Emerson and Chad Jasperson. Bridge Academy teachers Sheila Miller, Dave Harlow and Susan Blake gave further assistance. Vice Principal Cathy Leaver also joined the tour and was available to answer questions regarding discipline and administrative issues.

Their visit started at the office, where Gail Bliss signed our guests into the visitor’s book. The tour started iin the foyer of the high school, first by pointing out that all the flowers in the front of the school were planted by students, as well as, all the student work featured on the walls and display cases. The tour continued to the cafeteria wehre questions about the mission statement hanging on the wall were fielded. They had high compliments regarding our mission statement and the student guides elaborated how it is tied into our assessments at the high school.

Our visitors were very touched by Rachel’s challenge in the hallway. We told them about the Columbine shootings and our anti-bullying campaign at the high school. They asked our student guides to pose under the banner while they took multiple pictures.

We spent about a half an hour in the lobby with our guests holding an informal question and answer session. Questions ranged from how our school receives funds, how teachers are paid, assessments and standardized testing. Some of the teachers spoke individually with students about sports and after school activities.

The tour continued throughout the school from the auditorium, gym, and Technical Education classroom. Many of the teachers pointed out that the type of classes in our Technical Education program are reserved in their country as college level courses.

Upstairs in the science classrooms, our visitors were snapping pictures of all the student work on the walls as well as the maps. They adored the ceiling tiles painted by students, and again, snapped many pictures. The group was invited into the room where the Bridge Academy was meeting. Here the teachers were afforded the opportunity to ask questions to some of our newest members of the school.

When the tour continued downstairs, the group was shown where our reading specialist works, our SSC and ISS rooms. Further down the hall they were given and explanation of how our Learning Center is used as well as our inclusion room. The concept of inclusion education was new to them, and they had a great deal of questions regarding how inclusion works. Another area that fascinated the visitors was the Family and Consumer Science room. When entering this room they wanted to know what type of textbooks this field of study used and about the curriculum.

The tour ended in the computer lab on the first floor with a more formal question and answer session. The focus of this session rested on discipline issues and our continuum for discipline issues. Many of the visiting teachers are concerned with classroom management and discipline issues because their culture still allows corporal punishment, a practice they are trying to change. Cathy Leaver was on hand to answer their questions and talk about their concerns.

At the end of the tour our goodbyes were said and the visiting Pakistani loaded onto their shuttle to return to PSU. More information about the PSU Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute is available on their website: http://pelinstitute.org.

Seeking Your Input on Issues Related to Environmental Security and Sustainability

Published by mmcgarry under 2008 Participants

As a result of my involvement, (beginning with the summer of 2005), with Plymouth State University’ Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute (PELI), each year my interest in understanding this region of the world grows.  My interactions with the Pakistani Educational Leaders shape and enrich my work as an educator.  As I embark on educational initiatives from my home institution in Plymouth, NH, I think of the Pakistani educators whom I have met, and particularly of the group from this past summer of 2008 who developed environmental stewardship and cultural heritage preservation action plans.

For the first time this past summer, a small group of NH educators joined PELI for a week, and what an addition. The New Hampshire teachers developed their own environmental stewardship and cultural heritage preservation action plans appropriate for schools in their communities.  From their written reflective essays and spoken comments, it was clear the NH teachers were moved and motivated by the educational issues addressed in the Pakistani’s action plans.  As a result of our enriching cultural exchange, I now look at my own environmental education work through a new lens, asking myself- am I accomplishing enough, how can I have the biggest impact, what is the most productive use of my time to affect change, what difference will my activities make in the lives of students, and am I modeling being the best environmental steward?  My commitment to place-based environmental education will forever more have me urging students to consider the global significance and implications of their environmental activities.  I was so inspired by the collective energy of the involved teachers and I wonder how all are doing in their endeavors?  I hear news reports of problems in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and I think of our PELI colleague from this region.  When schools, allowing girls an education, are being threatened or closed, I imagine civic awareness about environmental issues must not be moving forward.

Yesterday, I started out my morning at the local K-8 school, attending a meeting with my 12 year old daughter.  Around 25 students, teachers, and the school principal, (mostly all females) met before school started to plan green, sustainable initiatives, including exploring building a green house or growing dome on the school property.  The president of the student council, a 14 year old girl, gave a report on the Plymouth Area Renewable Energy Initiative (PAREI).  PAREI, formed in 2004, has a mission to encourage energy conservation, energy efficiency practices, and promote the use of renewable energy at the residential level through education, community building and an increased accessibility to renewable energy:  http://www.plymouthenergy.org/.   The young woman making the presentation thought PAREI might want to collaborate with the school.  She brought forward an environmental idea to impact her school, hoping to enrich the curriculum, reduce the school’s carbon footprint, and help enhance the school’s grounds for wildlife.  I tell this story to emphasize how schools provide leadership opportunities for youth.

Thinking about schools being closed in the FATA, became more poignant when last night I watched the movie Daughters of Afghanistan, 2004, directed by Robin Benger, featuring Canadian journalist Sally Armstrong interviewing and following four Afghanistani females.  The film is about women who pursue liberation, who hope to harness a future for their daughters and includes a story of a school principal who is determined to provide an education for girls. The movie is in part a plea to the international community to help improve conditions -provide access to clean water, medical care, an education, and employment opportunities for women- vital components for rebuilding the country’s infrastructure. The message seemed to be transferable to the FATA.

I wonder how our PELI 2008 colleague from the FATA region is faring especially with her action plan, amidst the turmoil in her region.  I remember vividly the day this past summer when she informally shared about her life in the region when asked by the scientists from the United State Geologic Survey, who were guest presenters leading us on a field trip.  I’ve since read, the US has pledged $750 million for FATA largely for development. What difference will these tax dollars have for educators like my PELI colleague from the FATA?  What difference will my tax dollars have for improving the lives of girls and women in the FATA?  While we-Pakistani and New Hampshire educators- discovered our commonalities as teachers this summer- I’m also struck by the differences in the educational issues we face in our communities.

My real purpose in writing to my PELI colleagues at this point in time is to ask for your input. I have been invited to be part of an international NATO workshop focused on environmental security and sustainability. So, for the last month, I’ve been tuned into when, where, and how conflict and environmental issues intersect. A recent New York Times Article, Iraqi Elections Face Crucial Test in Violent Mosul, January 30, 2009, points out the fear that some have that the ensuing elections in Iraq are just another means for Arabs and Kurds to continue their struggle over limited natural resources like land, oil, and control of water supplies. As I plan my contributions for the NATO event, I find myself wanting to know how my PELI colleagues view the topic of environmental security and sustainability. What messages and or insights do you have from your region of the world?  How do the conflicts in Pakistan, especially in the FATA region, threaten the environment?  How have recent political events in Pakistan influenced environmental stewardship and cultural heritage initiatives? What kinds of communication/resources can best help support and sustain your educational initiatives and action plans developed during PELI?  I appreciate our PELI blog site, because otherwise, as Americans, all we have to go on is our news reports of instability in your country. I want you to keep informing my practice and life as an environmental educator.  I value what I learn from you.  I look forward to continuing my global education through PELI and I hope to take some of your views to my NATO workshop.
